Everything you need to know about The Marketing Room, our Managed Marketing Services model, and what it means to work together.

What TMR is

What is a Managed Marketing Service Provider (MMSP)?

A Managed Marketing Service Provider is a business that delivers experienced marketing capability as a flexible, ongoing service rather than through permanent hires or one-off agency projects, the same model businesses already use for IT (managed service providers), legal (counsel on demand) and finance (outsourced/fractional CFOs), now applied to marketing. The Marketing Room describes itself as the first MMSP, built specifically on this model.

What is the Open Marketing Model?

The Open Marketing Model™ is The Marketing Room's operating system for delivering marketing as a managed service. It's built on eight pillars: experienced people embedded in your team, a diagnostic audit at the outset, a "brand code" knowledge base that belongs to you, AI-integrated delivery, proven delivery frameworks, ongoing training, a global network of 130+ specialists, and experienced leadership oversight, designed so quality and consistency don't depend on which individual is leading the engagement.

Is The Marketing Room an agency, a consultancy, or a staffing company?

None of the three exactly. The Marketing Room is a Managed Marketing Service Provider, which sits between them. Unlike an agency, TMR's people work embedded inside your business under your brand. Unlike a staffing or contractor placement, engagements are backed by a defined operating model, experienced leadership oversight and a delivery framework, not just an individual left to self-manage.

Who actually does the work — is it TMR's own people or contractors?

Engagements are led by TMR's own experienced marketers (10+ years' experience minimum), supported by a global network of 130+ specialists across five markets. When a brief needs capability outside that network, TMR brings in vetted external capability under the same engagement, but always with an experienced TMR lead accountable for the outcome, so you don't end up managing a bench of freelancers yourself.

How TMR compares to the alternatives

What's the difference between a Managed Marketing Service Provider and a marketing agency?

A marketing agency typically runs projects or campaigns at arm's length and owns the process; an MMSP embeds experienced marketers inside your business, working under your brand as part of your team, backed by a defined operating model rather than a single account team. The output with an MMSP is judgement and delivery capacity you direct; with an agency, you're usually briefing and approving creative or media work delivered externally.

Is a fractional marketing manager cheaper than hiring in-house?

Generally yes for businesses that don't yet need a full-time senior marketer: a fractional or managed model avoids the fixed salary, on-costs, recruitment risk and ramp-up time of a permanent hire, and scales up or down with the work. The Marketing Room's SME tiers, for example, start from a fixed monthly fee for 25 hours a month of dedicated marketing support, a fraction of the fully-loaded cost of a permanent senior marketing hire, without a 6-month-plus recruitment process first.

What's the difference between capacity support and capability support?

Capacity support adds experienced marketing resource around your existing team when the workload has simply outgrown it, same skillset, more hands. Capability support brings in specific expertise your current team doesn't hold at all (a discipline, a platform, a type of strategy work), typically for a project or a defined period, without you needing to hire for a permanent skillset gap.

How is this different from just hiring freelancers or contractors?

Freelancers and contractors are typically self-managed: you're responsible for briefing, quality control and coordinating them yourself. With The Marketing Room, every engagement has an experienced lead accountable for the outcome, backed by a defined delivery framework, a Business Director providing oversight, and access to a broader specialist network if the brief expands, so you get one accountable relationship rather than several individual ones to manage.

Who it's for and how it works

Is The Marketing Room only for small businesses, or does it work for larger companies too?

Both. TMR runs four distinct solutions depending on business size and need: an SME solution (fixed monthly tiers for growing businesses), Corporate Resourcing (extending an existing in-house team at an enterprise or mid-market business), International Support (in-market marketing capability when expanding into a new region), and Advisory (independent marketing expertise for a specific strategic challenge). The model itself, experienced, embedded, managed, is consistent across all four; only the shape of engagement changes.

How quickly can The Marketing Room start on a new engagement?

For Corporate Resourcing needs specifically, The Marketing Room can move to identify and assemble the right solution within approximately 24 hours of understanding the requirement, once the scope is clear. Every engagement still opens with a short diagnostic conversation and, for most engagements, a paid diagnostic audit (credited to the engagement fee if you proceed) before delivery begins.

What happens in the first few weeks of an engagement?

Engagements typically follow four steps: an initial no-pitch conversation to understand the business, a workshop to define goals and gaps, a diagnostic audit of the current marketing (fee credited back if you proceed), and then embedding the agreed capability, which continues to flex up or down as the business's needs change, rather than locking you into a fixed scope for the life of the contract.

Do I need to already know exactly what marketing capability I need before contacting TMR?

No, the process is designed for the opposite situation. The first conversation and workshop exist specifically to diagnose where the actual gap is (capacity, capability, leadership, or a defined project), and the diagnostic audit that follows is evidence-based rather than TMR guessing at a package to sell you.

Does TMR replace my existing marketing team, or work alongside it?

Both are options, depending on the solution. Corporate Resourcing is specifically built to extend an existing in-house team without adding headcount, your team stays at the centre. The SME and Advisory solutions can instead become your marketing function outright, or sit somewhere in between, depending on what the business actually has in place already.

What industries does The Marketing Room have experience in?

The Marketing Room's Advisory practice alone spans more than 20 industries, including financial services, professional services, technology and SaaS, healthcare, mining and resources, energy, construction and property, retail and ecommerce, FMCG, government and the not-for-profit sector, reflecting the combined industry experience of its 130+ specialists across five markets rather than a narrow sector focus.

Which markets does The Marketing Room operate in?

The Marketing Room operates across five markets and three continents: Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom & Ireland, and the United States, with local, embedded marketing capability available in each rather than one central team working remotely across all regions.

Cost and commercial model

How much does The Marketing Room's SME service cost?

The SME solution runs on fixed monthly tiers: Marketing Support (hands-on execution and content delivery, 25 hours/month) and Marketing Lead (an experienced marketer providing direction and delivery, 25 hours/month) are each offered on 6-month terms, with a Marketing Team tier (a fuller combination of strategy and execution) available at a bespoke fixed fee for short-term projects. Exact current pricing is confirmed on the SME solutions page.

Is there a long-term contract, or can the engagement flex?

Engagements are designed to flex rather than lock in a fixed scope: capacity and capability can scale up for a launch or a peak period and back down between them, without a redundancy process or idle headcount sitting on your books. Specific commercial terms (including minimum terms on SME tiers) are confirmed as part of the initial conversation.

Is a diagnostic audit really free, or does it cost extra?

The diagnostic audit is a paid step, but the fee is credited back against the engagement cost if you proceed, so it isn't a sunk cost on top of the engagement, but it also isn't offered as a free trial. This is deliberate: it means the audit is a properly resourced, evidence-based piece of work rather than a sales exercise.

AI, governance and quality

Does The Marketing Room use AI in delivering marketing work?

Yes. AI is used to increase productivity and speed of execution (research, drafting, analysis, repetitive production work), but every engagement remains experienced-led: AI supports the work, it doesn't replace the marketing judgement, strategic thinking or accountability of the experienced marketer running the engagement.

How does The Marketing Room govern AI use with client data and confidential information?

AI use across engagements sits within a defined governance approach: a named accountable owner for AI governance, risk screening before any new AI-assisted use case goes live, a maintained register of approved tools and use cases, and human review before any AI-drafted or AI-influenced material reaches a client. No AI tool is permitted to make an unreviewed final decision affecting a client, content is AI-drafted and human-approved, not AI-approved.

Are TMR's marketers junior staff or graduates on a training program?

No. Every person delivering client work carries a minimum of 10 years' marketing experience, and The Marketing Room's stated model is deliberately "no junior delivery": engagements are led and executed by experienced marketers, not delegated down to junior staff while a senior person oversees from a distance.

What oversight do I get beyond the marketer working in my business day-to-day?

Every client has a Business Director as an additional, more senior point of contact who meets regularly (typically monthly) to review progress and provide broader strategic input, backed by Regional CEOs and head office leadership above that, so oversight doesn't depend solely on the individual marketer embedded in your business.

Working with your TMR marketer

What happens if my TMR marketer isn't the right fit?

Over nine years, we've developed a proven matching process designed to find the right marketer for your business, based on the capability you need, the challenge you're solving and the way your team works. We can also arrange an optional chemistry session with your proposed TMR marketer before the engagement begins, giving both sides the opportunity to make sure there's a strong cultural fit. And if, for any reason, the fit isn't right? We'll move quickly to find you a replacement.

Can I employ my TMR marketer directly during or after our engagement?

Our agreements with both clients and marketers include clauses that protect the TMR model and prevent direct employment during or following an engagement. That said, we're not going to stand in the way of a great opportunity for one of our people. If you and your TMR marketer decide that permanent employment together is the right next step, talk to us. We can provide a commercial proposal that enables the relevant contractual restrictions to be released.

Does my TMR marketer have to work inside our business?

Being embedded in your business is one of the key principles of our model. We've found that marketers are more effective when they're connected to your people, customers and day-to-day business. It helps them understand what's really happening, make better decisions and get things done faster. But every organisation works differently, so we're flexible. Depending on your needs, your TMR marketer can work on-site, remotely or in a hybrid arrangement.

Will my TMR marketer have experience in my industry?

They can, if industry experience is important to you, but we don't believe it should always be the first thing you look for. Over nine years, we've found that the experience, capability and quality of the marketer are often more important to success than whether they've previously worked in exactly the same industry. Great marketing principles transfer across industries. And sometimes, experience from outside your sector can bring fresh thinking, different perspectives and ideas that wouldn't otherwise be considered. However, if specific industry experience is essential to your business, we'll make it part of the brief and match accordingly.

How does my TMR marketer get up to speed with our business quickly?

We've built Scout, our onboarding and business knowledge tool, specifically to accelerate this process. At the beginning of an engagement, you can provide key information such as your business strategy, brand guidelines, customer insights, previous marketing activity and other relevant documents. Scout turns that information into a structured understanding of your business for your TMR marketer, covering your objectives, brand, customers, priorities and important industry considerations. It means less time explaining your business and less repetition for your team, so your TMR marketer can start adding value sooner.
